Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups 2% milk Warmed to about 110°F to 115°F
  • 0.25 cup Unsalted butter Melted
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1.25 teaspoons Instant yeast
  • 1 large Egg Beaten
  • 3.75 cups All-purpose flour
  • 5 teaspoons Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.25 cup Chocolate chips
  • 3 drops Red gel food coloring Plus more as needed

Instructions

  • Step 1: Warm the milk and butter in a saucepan until melted and warm (not boiling). Add sugar and yeast, let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Step 2: In a mixing bowl, combine the warm milk mixture with the beaten egg and red gel food coloring. Mix well.
  • Step 3: In another bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture until a dough forms.
  • Step 4: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if too sticky.
  • Step 5: Shape the dough into a ball, place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled.
  • Step 6: Punch down the dough, roll out into a rectangle, and sprinkle chocolate chips on top.
  • Step 7: Roll the dough tightly from one edge, pinch the seam, and cut into 12 pieces.
  • Step 8: Place rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffed.
  • Step 9: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Step 10: Let cool slightly before serving. Optionally drizzle with cream cheese frosting.
