Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Butter Unsalted
  • 1 large Onion Yellow, thinly sliced
  • Salt To taste
  • Black Pepper To taste
  • 20 ounces Ground Beef Enough for 4 patties
  • 4 slices Cheese Swiss, cheddar, or American
  • 8 slices Bread Rye or sourdough
  • Garlic Powder Optional
  • Worcestershire Sauce Optional

Instructions

  • Step 1: Melt the unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onion, sprinkle with salt and black pepper, and cook slowly until soft and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
  • Step 2: Shape the ground beef into 4 equal-sized patties, seasoning each side with salt and black pepper. Optionally mix in garlic powder or Worcestershire sauce.
  • Step 3: Cook the patties in a separate skillet or on a grill over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes on each side. Add a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute and cover to melt.
  • Step 4: Assemble the melts by buttering one side of two slices of bread. Place one slice butter-side down in a pan, add the cheesy patty, caramelized onions, and top with the second slice butter-side up.
  • Step 5: Grill the sandwich until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Press down lightly with a spatula for even grilling.
  • Step 6: Remove from the pan, let rest for a minute, then slice in half and serve hot with your favorite sides.

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Grill or Separate Skillet

Notes

Use good quality ground beef (80/20) for juicy burgers. Don't rush the caramelization of the onions. Experiment with different cheeses for varied flavors.
