Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground Turkey
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 0.5 unit Yellow Onion peeled and chopped
  • 1 clove Garlic minced
  • 10 ounces Frozen Chopped Spinach thawed and drained
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt divided
  • 1.5 teaspoons Black Pepper divided
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 0.5 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Spinach. Begin by thawing the frozen chopped spinach. This can be done in the microwave or by placing the spinach in a bowl of warm water for a quick defrost. Once thawed, make sure to drain it thoroughly—excess water can make the burgers soggy.
  • Step 2: Sauté the Onion and Garlic. In a medium skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil and sauté the chopped yellow onion for about 3-4 minutes until it becomes translucent. Add the minced garlic and continue to sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  • Step 3: Combine the Ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, sautéed onion and garlic mixture, drained spinach, Panko bread crumbs, ground nutmeg, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried oregano. Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Use your hands or a spatula to gently mix until all ingredients are just combined—be careful not to over-mix, as this can result in tough burgers.
  • Step 4: Form the Patties. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties. Use your thumb to make a small indentation in the center of each patty. This helps them cook evenly and prevents bulging in the middle.
  • Step 5: Cook the Burgers. You can grill or pan-fry the patties. If grilling, preheat your grill over medium heat and lightly oil the grates. Cook each patty for about 5-6 minutes per side, until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). If pan-frying, heat a drizzle of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for the same duration.
  • Step 6: Serve and Enjoy. Once cooked, remove the burgers from the heat and let them rest for a couple of minutes. Serve your Greek Turkey Burgers on whole-grain buns with your favorite toppings. Consider tzatziki sauce, fresh cucumber slices, and a side of sweet potato fries for a complete meal!

Notes

Extra tips: Ensure the spinach is well-drained before mixing it into the patties to avoid excess moisture. If the mixture feels too wet, add more Panko bread crumbs to help bind it. Let the formed patties sit in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before cooking for enhanced flavor. Don’t skip making the indentation in the burgers to keep them from puffing up while cooking.
