Ingredients

Onions

  • 2 large sweet onions (Vidalia or Walla Walla) Peeled and cut into thick rings

Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 0.75 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten

Frying

  • vegetable oil For frying
  • fry sauce For serving

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Onions - Peel the onions and cut them into thick rings, about ½ inch thick. Gently separate the rings and set them aside.
  • Step 2: Make the Batter - In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, seasoned salt, and baking powder. Gradually whisk in the cold water and beaten eggs until you achieve a smooth batter.
  • Step 3: Heat the Oil - In a deep pot or large frying pan, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom by about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches approximately 350°F (175°C).
  • Step 4: Coat the Onion Rings - Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring that it is fully coated. Shake off any excess batter before carefully placing it into the hot oil.
  • Step 5: Fry Until Golden - Fry the onion rings in batches until they turn a beautiful golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Use tongs to turn them for even cooking.
  • Step 6: Serve and Enjoy - Serve your crispy onion rings immediately while they’re hot and crispy, paired with fry sauce.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Deep Pot or Large Frying Pan
  • Tongs

Notes

For extra crunch, double dip the onion rings by coating them in the batter, then adding a light sprinkle of flour before frying.
